SCHOOL LEVY UP FOR VOTE ON VALENTINE’S DAY:
Show your “love” for our school and vote! A $3.7 million levy is up for vote on Feb. 14. If passed, Friday Harbor Elementary is slated to receive nearly 40% of the funding. These funds will go to a new roof, repair heating and cooling systems, replace siding, flooring and classroom fur- niture, repair fields & grounds, give everything a fresh coat of paint, get rid of the mold and mil- dew, and much, much more. FHES was built in 1986 and has had little to no building repairs or upgrades since: its time.

Here’s a quick, easy way to help out the PTA: We need parents to volunteer just a few hours to help us put together a slate of candidates for next year’s PTA Board. With four of our six current members “retiring” at the end of this school year, we would like YOUR input on who you think would make a great PTA Board Member. Self-nominations are welcome, so step forward if you’d like to be considered.

Rachel’s Challenge Comes to Friday Harbor Feb 8

Inspired by a victim of the Columbine tragedy, a unique and well- respected anti-bullying program will make its debut at our schools in February. Assemblies will take place at the elementary and middle schools, with opportunities for parents to join in at an evening event at the high school. We encourage you to engage with your kids about the program and to attend the community event in the evening. This amazing event will debut on Feb 8th: mark your calendars!

In kind donation by FH Presbyterian Church/Lighthouse Preschool. These Rachel’s Challenge programs will be free to our community! Please thank our sponsors for their contribution.

A full day of age appropriate school assemblies start at 9:45am at FHES (Elementary) K-5^th grades and 12 noon at FHMS (Middle School) Commons 6^th-8^th grades (Our local private schools are invited to attend each age appropriate assembly at the public school assemblies and have a team training session, please contact Debbi at 378-9479 for details.)

Peer-to-peer training session, 1:25pm at FHMS Commons (100 6^th-8^th grade students and teachers/parents) 1 ½ hours long

Food for Thought Program prepares a “Family Friendly” Dinner starts 5:15pm in FHHS (High School) Commons, donation suggested at the door. More information to come…

Childcare at Lighthouse Preschool/FH Presbyterian Church, drop off starts at 5:30pm, pick up by 7:45pm. Age limit: 3 years and older. Light snacks offered on location. Space is limited. Please note, the evening presentation is not appropriate for children under 7 years of age.

Rachel’s Challenge Community Evening Presentation, starts at 6:15pm in FHMS-Middle School Commons. This powerful hour will be geared for adults and teens of our community. During the presentation, riveting audio/video footage of Rachel’s Challenge will help to capture the power one act of kindness can have and the chain reaction it can cause! Our PTA "Dessert Potluck" Social is next week!! Please come Wed, January 11th to the FHES commons/gym at 6:30 with a dessert to share. The PTA would love to have an even bigger turn out than our successful ice cream social so please bring a friend or two.

This social will be a fun quick event with a focus on connecting room parents with there teachers, briefly chatting about the levy and how it affects out school, getting a nominating committee formed for the upcoming PTA slots, Book Fair Results, Mr. San Juan Island Evening, Works of HE'ART' Auction, as well as getting our anti bullying into effect with the 'Rachels Challenge' program.

Thanks to all who brought in Box Tops, Campbell Soup Labels and Kings receipts, together we earned $1065 from the Kings receipts.

Congratulations goes to the third grade class of 2021 for collecting the most this quarter! It was a close race with the 4th graders placing 2nd.

PTA Scholastic Book Fair & 5th Grade Breakfast

The annual PTA Book Fair will be held at FHES on Saturday,December3rd from9AM to Noon. The 5th Grade will also have its annual breakfast fundraiser that morning from 8:30AM to 11AM. Come enjoy breakfast before shopping at the book fair and help sup- port their class in raising money for their Pacific Science Center trip in the spring.

December is I Love to Read Month at FHES. The theme this year is “Pets, Paws & Pals.” FHES kicks off this special month with a short assembly on Dec. 2 and special events throughout the month to share the joy of reading.

It’s time for Poinsettias!

Another great way to support FHES is to purchase some poinsettias to brighten your home(or someone else’s!) for the holidays. Your child will be coming home with an order form this week (or you can place your order directly at the FHES office). Poinsettias will be priced at $13, $24, & $35 de- pending on size. Please place & prepay your orders by Nov 22. Plants will be available for pick up the FHES office by Dec 8.

Hi everyone!

Well, the great weather is upon us...just in time for school to start. (Ah, life in the Pacific Northwest).

We'd like to welcome back all the parents & the staff of Friday Harbor Elementary and send a warm welcome to our new interim Principal, Connie Martin.

We met with Principal Martin yesterday at our PTA Board Meeting...lots of good, new & fresh ideas being tossed around to make our PTA and FHES even stronger.

First off the bat, to encourage parental involvement and showcase some of the many, many opportunities to help your kids & our school, we'll be hosting an Ice Cream Social on Tuesday, September 27th at 6:30pm. PLEASE MARK YOUR CALENDAR AND PLAN ON JOINING US! :) This will be a fun meet & greet with Connie Martin and your PTA Board. In case you don't yet know, this year's board members are: Roxanne Angel (Co-President), Meghan Hoffman (Co-President), Stacey Germain (Co-Vice-President), Sabrina Helton (Co-Vice-President), Kathleen Foley (Secretary) and Shannon Wilson (Treasurer).

“Understanding Your Teenager And Loving Them Anyway”

FREE Workshop on Saturday, May 14^th, from 9:00 – 1:00 at FHMS

Presented by Shahn McGuire, LMFT

A teenager’s brain changes dramatically during adolescence. This causes them to change dramatically, seemingly overnight. Understanding this helps both the parent and the teen navigate this difficult time while still staying connected to each other and to what is important in “growing a healthy adult.” Join us for a parenting workshop where we will look at the changes that teens are going through biochemically, socially, emotionally and physically in order to help parents stay connected, stay sane, and to actually have some fun with their teens during adolescence. This workshop is useful for parents of all ages because they’re all going to turn into teens!

Tickets are $20/per person for a night of hilarity and delicious appetizers. Lice Issues at FHES

Parents of FHES students:

We have been experiencing a slow-rolling spread of lice at the school
this week, involving both live lice and nits, in various grades.

We have questioned all parents of children with lice; there of course
have been sleep overs, but one thing that has stuck out is that many of
the students who have lice are girls on softball teams, and their
siblings. If you have a child in softball, please make sure that they
have a cap covering their hair when using the batting helmet; better
yet, get her own batting helmet if you can afford it.

We have information at school about lice treatment, which you can have;
you can also email or call me, I am happy to send you files that I have.
If your child gets lice, please do not use the Rid or Nix or Lindane, as
they are neurotoxic, and ineffective. Olive oil, wrap head in saran
wrap, heat with hair dryer for 10 to 20 minutes (don't burn scalp, put
it on and off), then comb out with a nit comb for at least 2 weeks,
twice a day. Check your child every few days to make sure that they do
not have lice.

Learning About Transition to 7th Grade-Don't Miss It!

The 6th grade Family Night Out series is two important evenings you won’t want to miss. It is a time for parents to meet and confer with other parents from their grade level to make plans for best meeting new Middle Schoolers needs, and to be aware of risks and opportunities that may present themselves. It is a chance for families to talk about the transition together, for families to work and play together in a fun supportive environment with a focus on building skills and understanding each other better.

The first night, April 1st, dinner is served at 5:30. At 6:00 families will be introduced to the challenge program: fun cooperative games for 6th graders and parents to share in, while learning about setting goals, working cooperatively and using untapped skills. Students get to highlight their teamwork ability (and talk about issues they may face as they get older) and hopefully, as in the past, new insights are had by all.

The second night, April 15th, will begin the same way and at 6:00 families will take part in more challenge games, with different opportunities for learning. At 6:30, parents will take part in a presentation by Middle School staff about new challenges and risks Middle School students may face, and parents will problem-solve together. At the end of the evening, parents and 6th graders will take part in one last game, and then de-brief about their experiences. Usually students and parents come up with new insights learned from the evening(s) that they can carry with them in their move to Middle School.

This program is sponsored by the San Juan Island Prevention Coalition and the Readiness to Learn Program.

Mr. San Juan Island - March 19th!

Last year’s Mr. San Juan Island fundraiser was such a success that the Friday Harbor Elementary School PTA is continuing the competition. This year’s pageant is being held Friday, March 19th, in the Pavilion Room at Roche Harbor. The event isn't about beauty, brains or talent (although they'll be exhibiting all three at the pageant), but how much money each candidate raises.

As federal and state funding continues to dissipate, Friday Harbor Elementary School needs your support, now more than ever! Proceeds from the event benefit the FHES PTA and will go towards replacing the school’s 20+ year old gym mats and basic school supplies, as well as important programs such as PIP and music enrichment. The FHES PTA also contributes toward popular elementary school competitions, such as the Math Olympiad and the GeoBee. Mr. San Juan Island is a great way for ALL adults on our island to make a difference in a child's education.

Chef Bill Shaw and emcee Boo Boo Keane will delight you with delectable hors d’ourves and witty banter while you meet this year’s contenders: Bob Benz, Dan DeShon, Donny Galt, Geody Howden, Patrick Minney, and Scott Zehner. Each dollar you spend on the candidate equals a "vote;" and these men are ready to earn your money! The evening will entail fashion, talent and trivia segments. The candidate that raises the most money will be crowned Mr. San Juan Island at the end of the evening. Along with the show, you'll have an opportunity to bid on some great adventures--like an overnight trip for four to Seattle and Safeco field to watch the Mariners play. Doors open at 6:30pm and the show begins at 7:00pm.

A limited number of tickets are available and are $25 per person (21 years and older). They can be purchased at Market Chef, Griffin Bay Bookstore, or San Juan Island Fitness, or by calling Tanja Williamson at 378.6004 or Kerry Andrews at 378.1007.

17th Annual Knowledge Bowl-Thursday, February 4th

Friday Harbor High School Jazz Band will begin performing at 6:40 p.m. and the games begin at 7 p.m. at San Juan Community Theatre. FHMS PTA will offer delicious bake sale treats.

The competition begins at 7 p.m. with teams consisting of 8th grade students, a 9th and 10th grade team, and a 11th and 12th grade team going head to head with four local community service groups: Kiwanis, Soroptomists, Lions, and Rotary Club.

Teams match wits answering challenging and sometimes tricky questions on a range of topics, from physics to local history. The event is emceed this year by Brent Snow, with entertainment during intermission by Friday Harbor Jazz Band.

The Knowledge Bowl is presented each year by the San Juan Public Schools Foundation. Through its two main fundraisers, the Phone-a-thon and the Business Partnership Program, the Foundation has raised over $80,000 in the 2009 /10 cycle.

These funds were used to enhance local public education, such as High School algebra textbooks, 6th grade math and reading textbooks, Middle School math textbooks and the UW FH Labs program at the high school, as well as other projects throughout the year.

The ticket prices for this community event are just $5 for adults, and $3 for kids. This year there are several raffle items, including a trip for 2 on the Victoria Clipper. The last few years have sold out, so purchase tickets early at the SJCT box office.

Don't Miss the Spelling Bee-TODAY!

The 2010 Friday Harbor Community Spelling Bee will be held at the San Juan Community Theatre on Tuesday, February 2, at 3:30 p.m.

The annual contest is sponsored by the Rotary Club of the San Juan Islands, and features 4th through 8th grade classroom champions from local schools, including Friday Harbor Elementary School, Friday Harbor Middle School, Paideia Classical School, Griffin Bay School, and Spring Street International School.

This year, the 1st place winner will receive a personal award of $75, an award to their classroom literacy program of $150, and an award to their school literacy program of $300. The second place winner will receive a personal award of $50, $100 to their classroom, and $200 to their school. Doors at the theatre will open at 3:00, admission is free, and parents, family members, and the public are all welcome to attend.

Focus Day Party Bus - January 18th, 2010

How can you pass up plush seats, a bathroom on board and not to mention, no Seattle traffic headaches or Olympia parking fines! We have chartered a tour bus to whisk us away to an action filled PTA rally on the steps of Olympia, a meet and greet with a few choice legislators and to show those in Olympia that children are the Number 1 priority of this state.

This year’s bus will be stopping in the following locations:

Anacortes
Mt. Vernon
Marysville Park and Ride (off of 4^th street)
Everett Park and Ride (off of Exit 164^th)

We are “piggybacking” on Kenya’s return, as he’ll be here for the Youth Leadership Summit at FHMS/FHHS, sponsored by the SJI Prevention Coalition. If we were to bring Kenya here on our own, the costs would be much higher. In addition, one private donor, through the San Juan Island Community Foundation has offered to pay for two school assemblies on March 9th for the K-6 graders at FHES. They will continue to build on their “sense of community” in the school that Kenya highlighted last year through his powerful drum program Za Boom Ba. The students and teachers share these team building exercises through drum playing! How cool is that?! What an amazing gift this one donor has given to our students & teachers, again!

Register for Girls S.W.I.S.H. Basketball

FHAA sponsors teams to play in the S.W.I.S.H. Basketball program, an off-island league for 5th – 8th grade girls. Individual Tiger teams are created dependant on the number of registrants that apply.

PARTICIPATION FEES**: $125 per child.

The fees listed above are for the first child in your family. A $25 discount is given per additional child for those families that have more than one child signing up. Registration forms can be picked up in the front office of FHES.

Fees ** includes the league entry fee, player ferry fees for 11 weekends, and a logoed basketball uniform for the player to keep.

Stars Aligning on School Lunches

ANN COOPER has made a career out of hammering on the poor quality of public school food. The School Nutrition Association, with 55,000 members, represents the people who prepare it.

Imagine Ms. Cooper’s surprise when she was invited to the association’s upcoming conference to discuss the Lunch Box, a system she developed to help school districts wean themselves from packaged, heavily processed food and begin cooking mostly local food from scratch.

“All of a sudden I am not the fringe idiot trying to get everyone to serve peas and carrots that don’t come out of a can, like that’s the most radical idea they have ever heard of,” she said.

The invitation is a small sign of larger changes happening in public school cafeterias. For the first time since a new wave of school food reform efforts began a decade ago, once-warring camps are sharing strategies to improve what kids eat. The Department of Agriculture is welcoming ideas from community groups and more money than ever is about to flow into school cafeterias, from Washington and from private providers.

“The window’s open,” said Kathleen Merrigan, the deputy secretary of agriculture. “We are in the zone when a whole lot of exciting ideas are being put on the table. I have been working in the field of sustainable agriculture and nutrition all my professional life, and I really have never seen such opportunity before.”

Congress, which will take up the Child Nutrition Act as soon as October, has much to do with this year’s focus on school food. The act, which is reauthorized every five years, provides $12 billion to pay for lunch and breakfast for 31 million schoolchildren.

That the nutritional state of America’s children is a priority for President Obama doesn’t hurt, either. Mr. Obama put an extra $1 billion for child nutrition programs, including school food, in his 2010 budget proposal.

Michelle Obama has made better nutrition for schoolchildren part of her agenda, too, using the White House garden to promote healthier eating and often speaking about the importance of good diets for children, her own included.

Rochelle Davis, who founded the Healthy Schools Campaign in Chicago almost eight years ago, said having support from the White House has made her work easier.

“This is not a nice little niche issue anymore,” she said. “When I talk to people at U.S.D.A., they talk about what the president and first lady want. It matters.”

The Department of Agriculture is expected to upgrade school food nutrition standards this year, many of which haven’t been changed for nearly 15 years. And because many Obama U.S.D.A. appointees are focusing on improving student health through better food, the department has started an aggressive effort to study reform efforts big and small. These include the national farm-to-school program, which is in nearly 9,000 schools, and Food Options for Children in Urban Schools, a nonprofit based in New York that helps the nation’s largest districts change how they buy and prepare food.

Congress seems likely to spend more on school food this year, but just how much is uncertain. Under newly released reimbursement rates for the coming school year, most districts receive $2.68 for each free lunch served to a child who is poor enough to qualify. The rates vary depending on poverty level and region.

That money is the core of most school food budgets. But it does not cover the cost of the lunch, nutrition directors say, so they cannot afford to serve higher-quality food.

As a result, districts rely on processed commodity food from the Department of Agriculture and on extra income from the sale of popular foods like chips, pizza and burritos in what are commonly called à la carte programs.

The first step toward healthier school food is to increase that free-lunch subsidy by at least 70 cents, said Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Democrat of New York. Others want more and say it should be spent largely on fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains. But some observers argue that even 70 cents is unrealistically high, given other pressures on the federal budget.

“After bank bailouts and health reform, I worry about there being money left over for child nutrition,” said Margo Wootan, director of nutrition policy at the Center for Science in the Public Interest, who has helped write some of the legislation Congress will be considering. Still, the burdens of obesity and diabetes on the health care system make it easier to argue that schools should serve less processed food, advocates argue.

“If you feed a kid chicken nuggets and canned peas and Doritos and canned fruit as a school lunch or you feed him grilled chicken, steamed broccoli and fresh fruits and a whole grain roll, the difference is night and day,” Senator Gillibrand said.

As part of this year’s work on the Child Nutrition Act, Senator Gillibrand is co-sponsoring legislation that would ban trans fat in cafeteria kitchens and give the Department of Agriculture more power to set tougher federal nutrition requirements for the lightly regulated à la carte program in schools.

If Congress approves the changes, the agency would be empowered to change rules it set in the 1970s, when nutritionists worried more about dental decay and nutrient deficiencies than obesity. Cavity-causing jelly beans and Popsicles were banned, but not calorie-rich food like Snickers and ice cream bars.

But the federal government needs to address other issues, said Katie Wilson, the recent president of the School Nutrition Association and a Wisconsin food service director with 30 years of experience.

School nutrition directors should have to meet national standards to qualify for the job, she said. Complex nutritional regulations need to be streamlined. And kitchens need to be re-equipped so workers can actually cook healthier food. A recent School Nutrition Association study showed that over 80 percent of schools cook fewer than half of their entrees from scratch.

“If they don’t give me a steamer, I can’t steam a vegetable,” she said. “I have to deep fry it.”

Others say reform will require deeper surgery, arguing that the U.S.D.A. has a conflict of interest it must resolve: One part of the agency is charged with feeding children nutritious food and another helps large agricultural companies sell surplus food like beef and chicken that is usually processed into packaged products like taco meat or nuggets.

Ms. Merrigan said the federal government was adding more fruits and vegetables to the commodity foods list, but said that districts and parents needed to keep pushing to make meals healthier.

To that end, raising money for school food projects is in vogue this fall. Slow Food USA introduced Time for Lunch to lobby Congress for more school food funding, a new priority for an organization once focused solely on artisanal, not institutional, food. The effort will culminate in hundreds of Labor Day fund-raisers called “eat ins.”

This month, Whole Foods began a national “school food revolution” campaign starring Ms. Cooper, who will offer tips for better school lunches in store publications, on-line videos and a series of public appearances. The company is also asking shoppers to donate at the register to pay for Ms. Cooper’s work.

And the W. K. Kellogg Foundation recently narrowed its mission to pay for programs that help children eat better and exercise more. Over the next three years, the foundation will give out $32 million, about a third of which will go to school food programs. Ricardo Salvador, the program director, thinks that at last, momentum is building toward a better school lunch.

“If you can’t get this transformation going with all that lined up, then you’re never going to get it going,” he said.

B. Poland Springs seltzer water - water with bubbles
C. French fries
D. Candy Bars

If you guessed A, C or D you'd be wrong. Believe it or not, seltzer water is the only item on this list banned as a junk food because it doesn't contain any vitamins or minerals. Yup, french fries, candy bars, and Hi-C aren't officially considered junk food. That's just crazy when you consider that children ages 6-11 are four times more likely to be obese than children were a generation ago.¹ Four times! Today nearly one-third of all children are overweight or obese, placing them at heightened risk for heart disease, type 2 diabetes and many other serious diseases.²

In what universe are candy bars NOT junk food? The USDA's school nutrition standards were developed in the 1970's and are no longer consistent with nutrition science or current concerns regarding childhood health. For example, USDA does not consider candy bars, snack cakes, or french fries to be junk foods in schools. USDA standards don't even address calories, saturated, and trans fats or sodium.

Right now Congress is discussing ways to reduce health care costs in America. Improving nutrition in schools is one no-brainer answer.

Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) introduced legislation last week that would tighten the regulations on foods sold in schools. The bill parallels Lynn Woolsey’s Child Nutrition Promotion and School Lunch Protection Act of 2009, which was introduced in the House in March.

Both bills would give the secretary of agriculture the authority to regulate foods sold throughout the school environment. Currently, the USDA can only regulate fully reimbursable meals sold through the National School Lunch Program and an outdated list of “foods of minimal nutritional value.” That list is laughably short — it includes only soda water, water ices, chewing gum and certain candies, with no mention of fat, calories, sugar or sodium. What’s more, the USDA can only regulate those foods inside the lunchroom during the lunch hour. The lax rules allow schools to sell all the sodas, french fries and Snickers bars they want. And sell they do — those are the items that bring in the most revenue, and many cafeteria directors say they’re vital for keeping meal programs afloat.

Under the proposed legislation, the USDA would have to issue regulations for all foods sold on school premises, except for foods sold as part of fundraisers (a ridiculous loophole that may dilute the measure). The bills in the House and the Senate are almost identical, except that Woolsey’s legislation calls for regulation during the “extended school day,” which includes any activities under the school’s watch, even if they take place before or after official school hours. Harkin’s bill simply refers to the “school day” — which means students would be able to buy their sodas, chips and candy bars before they head off to their after-school activities…

The only other difference appears in the bills’ guidelines for the USDA regulations. Both bills would require the secretary of agriculture to issue regulations that take into account the “positive and negative contributions of nutrients, ingredients and foods to children’s diets.” Harkin’s legislation would additionally require the secretary to consider “nutrients of concern” identified in the most recent edition of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

These bills aren’t going to fix school food, but they’ll get rid of the soda and the deep fryers. And with the current state of school lunch, that’s a huge step in the right direction. Contact your senators and representatives, and make sure they get on board!

Mr. San Juan Island Competition

The Friday Harbor Elementary School PTA is putting the "fun" back in fundraising with a new twist on an old idea. Six of our island's finest father's will compete for the title of Mr. San Juan Island. The pageant is Saturday, April 25th in the Pavillion Room at Roche Harbor. The event isn't about beauty, brains or talent (although they'll be exhibiting all three at the pageant), but how much money each candidate raises.

With federal and state funding dwindling, Friday Harbor Elementary School needs our support, now more than ever! Proceeds from the event benefit the FHES PTA and will go towards important programs such as PIP and music enrichment, as well as help buy school supplies. The FHES PTA also contributes toward popular elementary school competitions, such as the Math Olympiad and the GeoBee. Mr. San Juan Island is a great way for ALL adults on our island to make a difference in a child's education.

Enjoy the edible delights from Roche Harbor's own Chef Bill Shaw, while emcee Boo Boo Keane introduces you to Stacey Brown, John Sable, Marc Vermeire, Paul Hopkins, Bobby Tangney, and Chad Foley. Blood and Guts at FHES

Last Wednesday, the Pacific Science Center's "Blood and Guts" Van made a stop at FHES. What a treat! The entire school learned about physiology, explored the skeletal system and followed the path of a red blood cell through the circulatory system. (Check out the photos above) Thank you the San Juan Island EMS and Inter Island Medical Center for underwriting this amazing program. And thank you to Lainey Volk (from the EMS) for helping staff the program. The students had a great time and learned something to boot!

Contest Kick-Off!

We are kicking off our Box Top/King's Receipts/Campbell's Labels Contest. Please continue to send in your King’s receipts and box tops, along with the UPC codes from Campbell’s labels. Every classroom has a designated collection container. At the end of the quarter, the grade level who collected the most receipts, etc., will win a Movie and Popcorn party. To help in this effort, a “make-it-yourself” storage envelope was sent home with the January PTA newsletter, Monday the 12th. Campbell's doesn't require the whole label anymore, just the UPC code. And, for every receipt, box top and UPC code we return to the corresponding businesses, FHES will earn money and products for the school!

Some fun news from 3rd grade parent Debbi Fincher:

Starting the New Year off with some special purpose is how FHES is getting back to school today. Principal, Gary Pflueger, had an all school assembly to introduce their "Random Acts of Kindness" theme in which paper chains will be made for each Random Act of Kindness a student shows someone else, the name and deed are written on each chain. The hope is to create "a chain reaction" where others will continue to be kind to someone they encounter. As the school year progresses, these "acts of kindness" will be hung throughout the halls as a reminder of the good deeds exchanged in the school. The paper chains are from recycled paper from the County. What a great way to start 2009!

Kid's Night Out takes place Saturday, Dec. 27 at San Juan Island Fitness located at 435 Argyle Avenue in Friday Harbor. The time period from 5 to 7 p.m. is reserved for Elementary School ages -(grades 2 through 5) and includes swimming, court games, hot dogs, and cheese sandwiches.

Middle School ages are invited to participate from 7:15 to 9:15 p.m. Activities include include swimming, court games (including a racquetball clinic). Refreshments will be served.

All swims are supervised by a certified lifeguard. PLEASE remember to bring a towel.

The cost is $7 per person. A portion of the proceeds goes to the respective school P.T.A

Winter enrichment is approaching fast! Forms will go home with students on January 5th and classes will begin the following Monday, January 12th. We're always looking for new classes and people to teach the staples as well (ie knitting!) so please contact Tanja Williamson (378.6004), or fhes.pta@gmail.com, if you are able to teach. And, if you can't commit to the five week session, how about volunteering one or two days between 2:45 and 3:00. That's the downtime after school and before enrichment classes begin and we can always use the extra help to keep the students focused and safe.

Long range Financial Planning and Advocacy for Full Funding of Basic Education

Tuesday, November 18th 6:30-8:30 pm in the Middle School Commons

We encourage parents, community members, and students to attend this forum. The quality of our schools depends upon our commitment to restructure programs and obtain sufficient funding to sustain excellence.

· Superintendent Michael Soltman will present information from the District’s Financial Task Force to include enrollment projections and assumptions about declining revenue.

· FHHS PTA President Deborah Nolan will present planning for legislative advocacy to compel the legislature to fully fund basic education.

PTA FOCUS DAY, February 26th “Go to Olympia”

· Information will also be provided about the District’s participation in the lawsuit to compel the State to fulfill its “paramount duty” to provide adequate funding for basic education.

FHES PTA GEARS UP FOR 2008-2009 SCHOOL YEAR!

Fresh from a successful fundraising campaign that resulted in Friday Harbor Elementary School’s new playground Big Toy, the 2008-2009 PTA is moving forward and beginning its 2009 campaign.

In addition to funding projects like the playground, the PTA has been responsible for providing money for several school programs. From helping to pay for teacher training to funding field trips and after school enrichment programs, the PTA is an integral part of the school community.

“As we know from our budget crisis earlier this year, schools can not depend only on state and federal money to ensure our children are getting the programs they need,” said FHES Principal Gary Pflueger. “The PTA—and their incredible fundraising support—is critical to the success of our school year.”

PTA co-president Tanja Williamson says an anonymous donor has pledged a $500 matching grant to start off the fundraising for the year.

Several ongoing programs need to be funded, including:
Music Enrichment
Geography Bee & Math Olympiad
Paicific Science Center Visit to School
Teacher Stipends (for special training)
Fieldtrips (ie: Orcas Salmon Hatchery, University of Washington Boat Trip, LaCrover Farm)
Development of school garden
Winter & Spring After School Enrichment Programs

The PTA will hold its first fundraiser of the year on Saturday, October 25, with a huge garage sale inside the school’s gym from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. In December, the school’s annual Scholastic Book Fair will also raise funds.

Anyone interested in donating directly to a specific program, may contact Tanja at 378-6004 or send those donations to FHES PTA at 95 Grover Street, Friday Harbor.

The Feet on the Bus Go Up and Down...

San Juan Island's 1st Walking School Buses were full!. With the help of parent volunteers, SJEMS and local service clubs, 63 kids arrived at Friday Harbor Elementary School at 9:25. There they were greeted by our own Chef Tom, with juice, freshly baked scones and fruit. Thank you to Marc Islam and Susan Williamson who put the routes together! Be sure to check out their Safe Routes to School website, just to the left. Hope to see you on Tuesday, when the regular route begins!

Walking School Bus Kickoff - Wednesday, October 8th!

Taproot Theatre comes to FHES

Taproot Theatre Touring Group came to present their new show,
Alexander and the Dragon. Co-sponsored by the FHES PTA and San Juan Island
Prevention Coalition, this production took the 1st through 5th graders on a magical journey as a student realizes his friend is bullying the new kid at school. They help the kids to remember the 3 R's: recognize, refuse, report the bullying behavior. The students of FHES also signed a "banner contract" with the word RESPECT on it, to help start the school year off on a positive note.

To all the parents who have expressed concern over the safety of the crumb rubber bedding on the new Elementary School playground:

The FHES PTA met with Mr. Soltman, Mr. Pflueger, and a Represenentative of Canfield and Associates Third Party Administrators, Steve Grout, on August 29th at the Friday Harbor Elementary School. Parents' safety concerns regarding the new playground cover were heard, and the School Board, and the PTA are investigating the safety of the crumb rubber playground cover. The Superintendent, Principal, School Board and FHES PTA will be discussing parents safety concerns, and researching alternative playground covers. Parents who are concerned about the crumb rubber on the new playground should contact Principal Gary Pglueger, Superintendent Michael Soltman, or any of the PTA board members, by e-mailing fhes.pta@gmail.com

Our first FHES PTA meeting is on September 3rd at 6:30pm at the Elementary School Cafeteria. Parents who are concerned about the crumb rubber on the playground are encouraged to attend this meeting. The FHES PTA will meet every first Wednesday of the Month at 6:30pm.
